Sarah Burton Wins Raves for Her Second Alexander McQueen Collection

The house of Alexander McQueen will have a harder time convincing the world they are not designing Kate Middleton's wedding dress, as rumored, now that the fall 2011 collection has walked in Paris. The closing dresses were quite white and quite frothy and quite stunning. "Kate Middleton, I love you but if you don't have Sarah Burton design your wedding dress, you're making a big mistake. HUGE," Elle creative director Joe Zee tweeted from the show. Shown in famous Parisian prison La Conciergerie, the runway collection was only Burton's second since succeeding McQueen after his suicide a little more than a year ago. The black harness worn by one model hinted at the late designer's signature sadistic edge. Burton opened with wool suits, accented with zippers and pleats, but then out came the gowns. Christina Binkley writes for The Wall Street Journal:

As though building to a denouement, the looks became more theatrical until there was no denying that there really is alot of Mr. McQueen’s DNA left in the brand ….or perhaps there was always a lot of Ms. Burton’s in it?

She concludes:
It’s worth taking a moment to give a nod to the executive team at Gucci Group and the Alexander McQueen brand. It was they, after all, who had the foresight to put Ms. Burton in the job when bigger names were being floated.

Burton's success in her new role — not just designing clothes but replacing he who cannot be replaced — is significant in a time when Christian Dior, one of fashion's biggest label's, searches for a new head designer. When today's show ended, Binkley reports, "the room erupted in cheers."
