THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE
Last night, The September Issue director R. J. Cutler gave a talk at the Apple Store. The focus was presumably Apple's fancy film-editing software and other techie things, but he couldn't resist gossiping a bit about his amazing, one-of-a-kind Vogue experience. Cutler had so much footage and the editing process was so complicated that he left André Leon Talley out of the first cut. He was reinserted into the final cut of the film, since this was obviously an egregious error: André is one of the most entertaining editors on staff and his "famine of beauty" line has become a catchphrase well in advance of the movie's release. Vogue super-fans can even download that phrase as a ringtone on The September Issue's Facebook page.

CFDA TOWN HALL MEETING
The CFDA gathered for its first town-hall meeting yesterday, moderated by CFDA president Diane Von Furstenberg. Their goal was to determine whether the fashion-show system is broken, and if so, how the industry can fix it. Donna Karan has long been an advocate of showing in season. You know, not showing buyers and editors clothes customers will wear in eight to twelve months' time, and not hanging fur-trimmed down jackets and mittens on the racks in August. "We are in a crisis," Karan said. "There's no question about it." Von Furstenberg is optimistic:
"There is no way when you are in the middle of a tsunami that you can change absolutely everything. But one thing that we can do and that I would like to do is make New York Fashion Week the most dynamic fashion week in the world."
That sounds fabulous, but what does it mean? Several at the meeting questioned the relevance of fashion shows and bemoaned retailers' early deep discounting. Von Furstenberg identified Vogue-sponsored Fashion's Night Out, a series of special in-store events to take place September 10, designed to encourage consumers to shop again, as a jumping-off point for this new attitude. Yet as amazing and dynamic as those events sound, they only comprise one night. What then? Will customers return a few days later, roused by a couple of cups of free punch and a runway strutting lesson with Alexander Wang, ready to lay down the AmEx for an $800 pair of new croc booties? With no solutions in sight to the problems at hand, it's not impossible. An extra visit to check if they're 30 percent off yet is surely worth it.

I SUPPORT THIS VERY MUCH
Amir Slama founded Rosa Cha, a high-end swimsuit label known for its ultrasexy, skimpy styles. Unsurprisingly in the dissertation The Wall Street Journal has published about how men should wear and care for their swimwear (necessary!), he advocates shorter, tighter styles. When he swims — often in places like Florianopolis in Brazil or Punta del Este in Uruguay — he wears "boy shorts," which are like boxer briefs but a little longer. When he's lounging, he wears another pair of shorts over them that stop at mid-thigh and slightly taper near the hem.
“Short shorts that are a little tighter near the knees make your body look longer and elegant,” he says. “Big and long shorts make you look like a potato bag.”
As you can see in our picture here, he's right! None of those models look like potato bags. Elegance incarnate, if you ask us.

Christian Siriano Is Collaborating With Starbucks
omorrow is a great day because, as Grub Street kindly informs us, Starbucks is giving away free pastries with the purchase of any beverage (it only runs until 10:30 a.m. or when the pastries run out, which is lame, but anything free from Starbucks is still exciting and worth the carbs). Tomorrow is also a great day because Christian Siriano is unveiling his holiday collaboration with Starbucks. Apparently the glory of reality-TV fame doesn't stop at holding one's own fashion show in Bryant Park and selling clothes at Saks. Details on the collaboration haven't been revealed, and news outlets aren't allowed to report them until November 17, but that gives us months to get excited and speculate about the exact nature of the partnership. Maybe he's designing clothes for the beverages to replace those boring cardboard sleeves. Or maybe he's designing Santa-inspired outfits for the employees to wear during holiday time. Or maybe he's simply letting Starbucks create one of those delicious iced sugar cookies with his face on it. Whatever they're brewing, it's good to see Starbucks finally doing something with the fashion industry, which arguably comprises the chain's biggest fan base. Hopefully this is their gateway to sponsoring Fashion Week in September. Not that the free McDonald's coffee wasn't fabulous in February, but unlimited free Starbucks would put the ubiquitous complimentary Veuve Clicquot to shame.
THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE
Anna Wintour is hosting a "splashy opening" of R. J. Cutler's Vogue documentary The September Issue on Wednesday, August 19, followed by a private dinner. No word on whether pools and swimming will actually be involved, but Oscar de la Renta is supposed to attend. Karl Lagerfeld, another of Anna's designer besties, is also not an unlikely attendant. Another screening takes place Saturday, August 22, in the Hamptons. If thinking about being in the Hamptons gives you hives, we suggest you try to catch the September Issue screening next Friday at 92YTribeca.
